Animal Shelters, Loafing Sheds & Coops
Sizing and siting run-in sheds, loafing sheds with tack rooms, and chicken coops for Colorado wind, snow, and predators.
Questions in this topic
What size loafing shed do I need for horses?
Plan roughly 12x12 of covered space per horse. A 12x24 comfortably shelters two, and a 12x36 handles three with room for hay or a tack room. Depth of 12 feet keeps wind-driven snow off the back wall. Sizing per horse is covered in our Colorado loafing shed buying guide.
Read answerAre loafing sheds portable, and can I move one later?
Yes. Our portable loafing sheds are built on a 6x6 pressure-treated perimeter with tow hooks, so they can be dragged to a new pasture or rotated as grazing changes — no foundation required. See a real multi-shelter delivery in our Franktown loafing shed project.
Read answerDo I need a permit for a loafing shed or run-in shed?
It depends on size and zoning. Many Colorado counties exempt small agricultural shelters on properly zoned acreage, but larger shelters, or any structure inside town limits, usually need a permit and must respect setbacks. Agricultural exemptions by county are covered in our Colorado shed permit requirements guide.
Read answerHow much coop space do chickens need?
Plan about 3 to 4 square feet of coop floor per standard hen, one nesting box per three to four hens, and 8 to 10 inches of roost bar each. Colorado winters make ventilation and predator-proofing just as important as square footage. Flock sizing and coop options are in our chicken coops for sale in Colorado guide.

Read answerCan I keep chickens in a shed?
You can, but a purpose-built coop works better. Chickens need nesting boxes, roost bars, ventilation, and predator-proofing, which a storage shed does not have. Plan about 3 to 4 square feet of coop floor per standard hen. Our coops arrive fully assembled with those features built in — see our chicken coops.
Read answerCan I use a loafing shed for goats, cattle, or other livestock?
Yes. A loafing shed is an open-front, three-sided shelter that works for horses, goats, sheep, cattle, and other livestock that need protection from wind, snow, and sun. Size it to the number and type of animals, and face the open side away from prevailing wind. See sizes on our loafing shed page.
Read answerCan I use a barn as a workshop?
Yes. A Hi-Wall barn is one of the best shed styles for a workshop because the taller walls and loft give you standing room and overhead storage, leaving floor space for benches and tools. Plan electrical permits if you add power. See sizes and options on our barns page.
