What size loafing shed do I need for horses?

    The short answer

Plan roughly 12x12 of covered space per horse. A 12x24 comfortably shelters two, and a 12x36 handles three with room for hay or a tack room. Depth of 12 feet keeps wind-driven snow off the back wall. Sizing per horse is covered in our Colorado loafing shed buying guide.

Horses crowd the shelter in bad weather, so size for the worst day, not the average one. 12 feet of depth is the number that matters most — shallower shelters let wind-driven snow reach the back wall and animals stop using them.

    • 12x12 — one horse, or a mini and a companion.
    • 12x24 — two horses with easy in-and-out.
    • 12x36 — three horses, or two plus hay and equipment.
    • Add an enclosed tack room bay to keep saddles and feed dry and secure.

Face it away from the storms

On the Front Range, open sides generally face south or east. Getting the orientation right does more for animal comfort than any upgrade you can buy.

Our Colorado loafing shed buying and sizing guide walks through every size, roof style, and weather-proofing choice in detail.
