How much coop space do chickens need?

    The short answer

Plan about 3 to 4 square feet of coop floor per standard hen, one nesting box per three to four hens, and 8 to 10 inches of roost bar each. Colorado winters make ventilation and predator-proofing just as important as square footage. Flock sizing and coop options are in our chicken coops for sale in Colorado guide.

Crowded birds get pecky and sick, so build in room to grow the flock. Beyond floor space, Colorado adds two requirements: ventilation without drafts for cold nights, and hardware-cloth predator-proofing for foxes, raccoons, and hawks.

    • 3 to 4 sq ft of coop floor per standard hen.
    • 1 nesting box per 3 to 4 hens.
    • 8 to 10 inches of roost bar per bird.
    • High vents plus a sealed lower coop keep moisture and frostbite down.

Sizes, models, and delivered pricing are all laid out in our guide to chicken coops for sale in Colorado.
