What floor joist spacing do you use?
The short answer
Our sheds are framed with floor joists 16 inches on center, and our garages step up to 8 inches on center. Both sit on pressure-treated 4x4 runners with PerformMAX flooring above. We explain spacing and spans in what is a floor joist.
A floor joist is a horizontal framing member that carries the floor deck and everything on it. Closer spacing means less deflection, which is why a garage floor that will hold vehicles is framed far tighter than a storage shed floor.
- Sheds: joists at 16 inches on center.
- Garages: joists at 8 inches on center.
- Runners: pressure-treated 4x4s rated for ground contact.
- Decking: PerformMAX flooring, which resists moisture better than bare OSB.
